Deadline for submissions: Jan 15, 2024
Juror: Jeff Curto
Prints due: Feb 23, 2024
Exhibition: March 8 - March 29, 2024
Even the most mundane human activity leaves evidence of its existence. Old shopping lists, a once-loved stuffed animal, fragments of an old wedding dress, all speak of the passage of time. Larger human activities leave boarded-up storefronts, crumbling infrastructure. No matter the scale, they all leave a nostalgic hint of an irretrievable past and, ultimately, of our mortality.
For this exhibition, we seek images that hint of humans come and gone by the traces left behind.
We are very pleased that Jeff Curto will be the juror Traces. He will select up to 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery and another 40 images for our Online Gallery. All 75 images will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog and remain permanently on our website, with links to photographer’s URL.
To further reward excellence, we are offering $500 to the Juror's Award recipient, and $250 to the Director's Award recipient.

The Arrowmont Artists-in-Residence Program provides early career, self-directed artists time, space and support to develop new work and be an active part of the Arrowmont community. Each year, five artists are selected to participate in the 11-month program, which begins in mid-June and continues through late May of the following year. Started in 1991, the Arrowmont Artists-in-Residence program will celebrate 30 years in 2021.
Artists-in-Residence are given a monthly stipend, shared housing with private bedrooms and meals (during workshop sessions), and a private well-lit studio with climate control, a basic work table, shelving and sink. Residents provide instruction for Arrowmont’s celebrated children’s education program, ArtReach, and are offered paid teaching opportunities. Professional development is made available through funding and networking sources. Multiple exhibition opportunities are provided on- and off-campus. The program encourages early career artists who embrace community, are highly self-motivated and enjoy working in a team environment to apply.
The ideal candidate for the Arrowmont Artists-in-Residence Program is an early career, self-motivated individual able to work well independently and within a larger organization. The successful resident is eager to be involved with Arrowmont’s diverse existing program offerings such as workshops, conferences, events and exhibitions. Candidates who enjoy the team spirit in working with staff, other residents and visiting artists/instructors are encouraged to apply. The artists selected each year work in a variety of media which reflects the strength of Arrowmont workshop offerings and resources. The Arrowmont Artists-in-Residence Program is open to permanent residents of the United States.

EMPATHY became the next theme of the 32. International Jewellery Competition, the main event of the Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER 2024.
The competition has been organized by the Gallery of Art in Legnica since 1979 (initially as the National Review of the Goldsmiths Forms). It is one of the oldest initiatives to promote contemporary artistic jewellery in Europe, supporting creative explorations within a niche field at the intersection of art, craft and design.
Artists from all over the world, goldsmiths, designers, professional and amateur jewellery makers are invited to participate in the event. Each year the competition is held under a different title referring to important, universal problems and issues from the spheres of broadly understood art, culture, sociology or media. This time the theme becomes EMPATHY. The competition is artistic in nature, and the organizers leave artists full freedom of choice of techniques and materials.
Each year, nearly 200 artists from about 30 countries around the world apply to participate in the event. The distribution of awards and the qualification of works for the exhibition is decided by an international jury consisting of renowned artists, professors, critics, experts and jewellery collectors. The works rejected by the jury are traditionally presented during the Festival in the Old City Hall, so that the audience has the opportunity to compare their own opinions with the jury's verdict.
Participation in the competition is free – participants only cover the cost of shipping and returning the works.

The 13th Annual PleinAir Salon Art Competition is a monthly online competition consisting of 19 categories. We award $50,000 annually. Each of the 23 monthly winners are automatically included in the Annual Competition in the spring. The Annual Grand Prize winner receives $15,000 and is featured on the cover of PleinAir Magazine. We award an additional $9,200 to the annual winners and award $2,150 monthly. The annual awards are presented live at the Plein Air Convention & Expo each spring.
Because this competition is created by PleinAir magazine, which features not only plein air paintings, but also studio paintings, all types of paintings are eligible and do not need to have been completed in plein air. As we know, many studio paintings start with plein air sketches, and many plein air painters paint figures and still life. Our interest is in rewarding great paintings.

The Pence Gallery announces that its Emerging Artist Award 2024 is now open. This award supports the creation of new work by emerging artists in California and the opportunity to share that work through an exhibit and an artist talk in January 2025. Artists must use the award of $4000 to further their work in a significant direction and may work in any medium, except for video or sound art.
Artists must live in California at the time of application, and be 18 or older. ‘Emerging’ is defined as an artist who is early in their art career, who has limited experience exhibiting, but not an extensive solo exhibit history. The artist’s submitted work must be of high caliber, original, and completed within the past five years.
